According to Ms. Grimes, an SCS technician reviews each piece of acreage applying for the program and lays off the strips using topographical maps supplied by the office. SCS services are free to local farmers, though Ms. Grimes cautioned that completion of individual requests for stripcropping plans are dependent on office schedules and the time of year. In most cases, she said, requests can be processed in just a few days.
Information on erosion control, stripcropping and other conservation programs are available through the Rappahannock County ASCS office (675-3616) or the county Extension office (675-3619) both located on Gay St. in Washington; or the Soil Conservation Service district office in Culpeper (825-5060). Both the SCS and ASCS are affiliated with the United States Department of Agriculture. j
Uniform
fund set up
The Rappahannock County High School girls’ basketball teams are in need of new uniforms, and donations are being accepted to raise the necessary funds. The uniforms worn by the teams last year are old and in need of replacement.
According to Phyllis Atkins, a total of 52 uniforms are needed to outfit both the varsity and junior varsity teams with two sets—one for home games and another for away games. Each uniform costs $54.
Containers for donations are being set up in various locations, mostly general stores, throughout the county. Mrs. Atkins said that the containers will be collected on June 1, since the uniforms must be ordered in early June to be received by the first game in September.
