; The Bluemont Concert Series is pleased to present the fifth tribute to John Ashby to be held on Saturday, April 29, 8:00 p.m. at the Warirenton Junior High School ; auditorium in Warrenton. Admis; sion will be $5 per person, $3 for Bluemont Concert Series Friends. All are welcome.
The tribute to John Ashby is an event in honor of a great Fiddler; it is also a celebration of the old-time stringband music which is a unique part of our cultural heritage. This evening will present the traditional country music of this area as it has been played at country dances and gatherings for generations.
During the evening there will be a special tribute to Mr. Cy Kines of Gainesville. Mr. Kines is an 82 year old fiddler who w^as a hunting and fiddling friend of John Ashby. Cy and his band, the Cedar Run Homesteaders, are well-known in old time music circles in the region.
The tribute will feature a host of other fiddlers and old-time musicians. Musicians and bands who have said they are coming include: Skip Ashby and the Free State Ramblers, The Shenandoah Travelers, The Cedar Run Homesteaders, Richard Goff, Claude Loy, Aaron and Hugh O’Beir, Speedy Tolliver and others.
John Ashby (1925-1979) lived near Marshall, Virginia and made his living as a carpenter and his reputation as a fiddler. With his band, the Free State Ramblers, he played for local country dances and gatherings for over 40 years.
When he died in May 1979, John was a nationally acclaimed fiddler who had recorded three albums and won Best Old Time Fiddler and Best All-Around Fiddler at the 1978 national Old Time Fiddler’s convention in Galax.
As an ongoing part of our Tribute, the Bluemont Concert Series seeks to locate historical materials about John Ashby, his music and his life, and about the old-time music, musicians, and music halls of this area in the past. Materials might include taped recordings, old newspaper articles, photographs, letters and/or personal remembrances.
