Robert Anderson, the newly appointed representative of Stonewall* Hawthorn District, said he shares I)r. Young's dilemma. "As someone who was hornswaggled into selling cakes on the Fourth of July to benefit the library, I would sure like to see it kept in public hands,"
Jackson District Supervisor Ellis Bingham suggested that the entire problem be returned to the drawing board. "Given the building’s historic value, it would be very appropriate for the Historical Society to move into the building, providing the shuffle can be worked out.” And, he added, "it would behoove us to ensure that the arts are taken care of. ”
The speakers, Mr. Massie said, "have given us a lot of food for thought. I have a lot of comments, but I'm not ready to make them tonight."
But. he added, if the board members who voted to sell the school property had exercised foresight and looked ahead to the county’s future growth and needs for space, “we would not be talking here tonight."
If, Mr. Massie continued, the decision to sell the library to a private party is made consciously, “that's fine. If not, they we do a disservice not just to ourselves, but to future taxpayers as well."
Both the Board of Supervisors and the Town Council have placed further discussion of the proposed swap on the agendas for their May meetings.
