The Garden Club of Virginia’s next project will be the restoration of the 17th century garden at Bacon’s Casde in Surry County. Bacon’s Castle is the oldest documented brick dwelling in the state.
In a joint venture with the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, the Garden Club willsupport the restoration and maintenance of the only English style renaissance garden in tne United States. It is comparable in size to a football field.
The Warrenton Garden Club, the second oldest garden club in the nation, was founded in 1911. It was a charter member of the Garden Club of Virginia when it was established in 1920;
The house and garden tour sponsored by the Warrenton club this year included five private homes, the Old Gaol Museum ana Airlie gardens.
At Airlie, the formaTl9th-century gardens between the conference center and the pavilion are planted with 5,000 tulips and are surrounded by stone walls. In contrast wildflowers are found along woodland trails and surround a sundial that has been on the grounds since the 1800s. A waterfall, seven lakes and free swimming swans accent the carefully maintained grounds.
