The following evening Rappahannock traveled to Mt. Jackson and completed a regular season sweeep of the Stonewall Jackson Generals. Posting an 18-2 win, the Panthers beat the Generals in every phase of the game -- at the plate, on the mound, on defense, and on the base paths.
In the first inning Deena Hitt drew a walk, stole second, advanced on a sacrifice fly, and stole home. Dawn Johnson, batting third, also walked, stole second and third, and scored on a sacrifice by Boddie. RCHS tallied seven more runs in the second for* a 9-0 lead and never looked back. The speedy Panthers also stole 13 bases from the outgunned Generals.
Last year, Rappahannock’s first in softball competition, the Panthers were trounced by the Central Falcons, 22-5, in five innings.
This year, after his team eked out a 6-3 victory, the Falcon coach complimented the RCHS girls on how far they had come.
“It was a game we should have won,” coach Leake said. “We had four runners on third thrown out trying to score; we just didn’t run on the base paths well enough. The girls played hard and I made some mistakes, but we’ll get them on Friday at their place,” Mrs. Leake promised.
Rappahannock opened up the early lead in the first inning when Deena Hitt traveled around the bases on errors. Their defense let up a little in the third inning, allowing four runs, and despite hitting the ball hard the Lady Panthers couldn’t start a rally.
Mrs. Leake was a bit down after the game. “We could have won,” she repeated. However, she did find cause for optimism, pointing out that her girls have scored 67 runs in their last four contests.
