By the third inning Smith’s arm was loose and he allowed only two hits the remainder of the contest. In the third he rallied his team by striking out the first two batters and forcing the third to ground out to Porter. In the bottom of the inning with two men out Ellis laced a double to left field scoring two. Groves evened the score at six with a single and crossed the plate for the winning run, 7-6, on a wild pitch.
“I thought it was a great game. They have a very good ball club and it was important for us to go on the road and win,” said Panther coach Gary Leake. “Doug pitched an excellent game even though he didn’t get into a groove until the late innings. He still struck out ten."
With the win against Stonewall, the Panthers were singing. But the song turned into the blues Monday after the loss to the Falcons of Central High School. “The Bull Run District is full of good teams. No one is going to nan away with it this year. We’re all too evenly matched. So when you commit six errors against a team of equal ability, there’s no way you’re going to get the win,” said Leake after his team threw away a home game in the top of the eighth inning to their Bull Run foes from Woodstock, 5-3.
The loss was especially hard to swallow after what the coach called an “exceptional game on the mound” by Danny Ellis. “He did everything I wanted - everything but win,” said Leake. “He had four strikeouts but mainly he kept the ball low, forcing them to hit on the ground. Our defense just didn’t give him the support he needed.”
“It’s the same thing that’s plagued us all season. We play teams close but we don’t get the breaks in the late innings, and we lose by one or two runs. In extra innings you have to channel something from ' your defense to carry over to the offensive end. Today we didn’t. Our defensive lapses were definately the turning point of the game,” Leake said.
Rappahannock is 3-4-1 this season and remains a strong contender for the Bull Run District’s four-team post-season tournament.
