Does a vine-ripened, homegrown tomato look different from a hothouse produced, grocery store tomato? With tomatoes, it may be easy to tell when fruit is ripe, but for a beginning gardener, telling when to harvest produce may be difficult.

Sometimes as much produce is lost to improper harvesting as to insects.

Here are descriptions of harvesting cues for some commonly homegrown vegetables.

Green or Wax Snap Beans: Pick when the pods are full size, but before the seeds cause the pods to bulge. The newer varieties can be delayed until the beans are full size as long as the pods are still tender. The pods should break easily with a “snap” when ready for harvesting.

Pole and Half Runner Beans: Harvest at the same stage as snap beans or, allow to mature for shell beans. When mature, pods will split open easily and seed will come free from the pod.
