The clubs were established as an adjunct to the Extension Service, which was designed to provide farmers in outlying areas with access to the latest information on technology and techniques. Once called Home Demonstration Clubs, the name was changed to Extension Homemakers Clubs to better represent their function a fewT years after their establishment in the early 30s.
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University representatives from the Extension Service’s Blacksburg headquarters often visited communities with home demonstration groups, meeting in homes or churches. They provided educational mateHals on every topic from new home refrigeration techniques to planning a successful budget to making cheese or caning a chair.
These simpe instructional and demonstrative meetings helped to influence a generation’s habits at work and play.
