CULPEPER-The budget of the Federal government is considered to be the most important issue for Congress to deal with in 1989, according to results of a recent poll of Seventh District residents conducted by the office of U.S. Congressman D. French Slaughter Jr. (7th-VA).
“The Federal budget deficit has been the chief concern of district residents for a number of years,” said Mr. Slaughter, w ho has been an advocate of budget reform in the Congress since 1985.
According to Mr. Slaughter, the budget led as the top issue of concern in the 1989 poll with a response rating of about 46 percent, followed by drugs and crime (20 percmt), environmental cleanup (10 percent), education (5 percent), and health care (4 percent).
Rep. Slaughter noted that over 75 percent of those who answered the poll indicated that they favor a Constitutional amendmemt to require the Federal geovemment to balance its budget, except during times of war or national emergency. About seventy-two percent of poll respondents support granting the President line-item veto authority on the budget. Mr. Slaughter supports legislation in favor of both of these measures.
