Most of SummerQuest is held at Culpeper Junior High School; however, “The Mountains” class is taught in Rappahannock by RCHS’s Jon Heddleston, with his pupils bused in daily from their home counties.
All of Rappahannock’s 12 SummerQuest students are participating in the Culpeper-based classes, and travel daily by bus to town where they interact with outstanding young people of their own age from other school divisions.
SummerQuest classes differ greatly from usual school-year classes. There are no tests, no homework. Hands-on activities with opportunities for interaction and creativity are emphasized.
The resulting enthusiasm is amazing.
For example, the only discipline problem that across during last year’s SummerQuest was when administrators insisted that the kids take a full 30 minutes for lunch - the teachers needed the break, but the students couldn’t wait to get back to their projects!
