The Communist leader who ordered the butchery, Deng Xiaoping, recently gave a speech, portions of which were published by the New York Times. The Chinese leader said: “Once we have stabilized the political situation and have the economy going again, the foreigners are still going to come knocking at our door.”
This is sad but true, for when the Soviets attacked KAL 007 in 1983 and there was a great furor, the Soviets said it would have no lasting effect on their ties to other nations. They were right and the U.S., especially, kept sending them equipment, supplies, and credits. Will the butchers in Peking also be correct? Will the United States continue to help them maintain their tyranny?
