A new question of the annual survey relates to the two main alternatives being considered in the U.S. House of Representatives with regard to the child care isssue. Over 75 percent of those who answered indicated their preference for a tax refund (phased out at higher incomes) to allow parents of preschool aged children to make their own child care decisions as opposed to a new Federal government child care, program.
A question pertaining to the new Medicare Catastrophic Protection Illness Act of 1988 was included in this year’s questionnaire for the first time. By more than nearly 3 to 1 ratio; respondents over the age of 65 indicated their opposition to the new program.
With regard to the nation’s drug problem, in a multiple choice, over 75 percent of those who answered believe that increased penalties for drug dealers should be incorporated into law, 57 percent opted for increased use of our military force to stop the transport of drugs into the U.S., 24 percent approve of increased funding for drug education and 28 percent favor increased funding for drug rehabilitation programs.
