how this tax is figured.

Rappahannock’s rate is based on 100 percent of the average loan rate listed in the National Automobile Dealers Association book of values. The book also lists rates for retail values and average trade in values. The retail value is highest and the loan value is lowest. The trade-in value is in between.

Fauquier County’s rate of $4 based on loan value is definitely higher than Rappahannock’s. Page County’s rate of $1.50 based on loan value is definitely lower.

Warren County’s rate is $2.80, but it is based on trade in value. Culpeper’s rate is $6.25, but it is based on 40 percent of tradein value. Madison County’s rate is $7.50, and it is based on 20 percent of retail value.

The surroundings counties also have taxes that Rappahannock doesn’t have. Warren County has a tax of $2 per $100 assessed value on machinery and tools. Fauquier also has such a tax, but the rate there is $4. In Page County this tax is $1.50. Culpeper has a tax rate of $5 on machinery and tools, but this is assessed on 40 percent of wholesale value, and Madison has a rate of $5.50 assessed on 20 percent of ratail value.

Several of the counties also have merchants’ capital taxes. In Culpeper the rate is $2.50. In Madison is is $4.30, and in Madison it is $1.50.
