Despite several weeks of dedicated pre-season practices, the Lady Panthers varsity basketball team lost its first three games, including two blowouts against George Mason and Central.
The season got off to a rocky start in the home opener against George Mason, with the Panthers committing 39 turnovers as they lost to the Mustangs, 45-30. The team’s pre-season camaraderie and teamwork fell apart on the court, while an offensive drought allowed George Mason to hit 28 points against only two for the Panthers during the second and third quarters.
Sherron Boddie led the Panthers offensive and defensive efforts, with eight offensive points and 20 rebounds. Freshman Leah Marlett contributed six points, the outstanding effort for the night, according to Coach Renee Leake.
The Panther JV also dropped their opening game to the Mustangs, 32-19. Lisa Sisk led the Rappahannock offense with six points.
After Coach Leake’s disappointment with the team’s performance in the openihg game, the Panthers rallied during their second outing of the season against Clarke County last Thursday night at RCHS.
Coach Leake said she found the team’s effort much more on a par with its potential against Clarke County, where the Eagles scrambled to hold off a Panther rally in the second half to win, 48-42.
Though the Panthers trailed through the first half against an aggressive Eagles defense, Rappahannock came back on the court following the half-time break with a new fire, rallying to pull within one point, 28-27. Tasha Roy and Leah Marlett combined for eight points to bring the Panthers back into the game.
