Locally, members of the EMS team range from first responders at the scene, dispatchers, trained EMS technicians, medical transportation, EMS Council, as well as emergency doctors and nurses in hospitals.
According to the American College of Emergency Physicians, accidents are the fourth leading cause of death overall and the number one cause of trauma and death in those under age 38. This year 90 million emergencies will be treated in hospital emergency rooms. Someone dies every five minutes or is injured every three seconds.
In rural areas, the risks of accidents increase from farm machinery especially during harvest time. Although an accident or sudden illness can happen to anyone at any time, most people think that they happen only to other people.
Emergency Medicine is a specialty. Emergency doctors never know what case will enter the hospital emergency room. They may be treating a heart attack one moment and a sprained ankle the next. The cases commonly appearing are toxicology, advanced cardiac life support, trauma resuscitation and environmental emergencies. Some emergency doctors also serve as state-certified EMS directors and provide medical direction for prehospital care providers.
