Mr. Fitzsimons believes that some of the cheats and charlatans that we read about might have been started down the wrong path by their early religious training. He, however, had the same kind of childhood religious training as he apparently thinks the cheats and charlatans had. I don’t suppose he wants us to think that he, too, is a cheat and charlatan.
Finally, he seems to think that every child in Sunday school is being taught the religious lessons he was taught: hell fire and damnation on one hand, and “all the best people go to church” on the other. Well, I am sure that the churches still teach the importance of faith. I am also sure that they teach about hope and charity.
And I know that my churchgoing friends go, not to be seen, but because they find it a rewarding experience. Faith is a fragile thing, as Mr. Fitzsimons should know. If my friends find support for their faith in the church, I say, more power to them, and to it. W. MICHAEL MAHONEY
