A Winchester radio station interviewed Rep. Slaughter and began with questions about the charges Mr. Smith has made.
Rep. Slaughter’s answers ramble. They do not directly answer the questions and the congressman sometimes sounds confused.
Heaving a sigh that belies the pleased smile on his face, Mr. Smith says that if he can’t debate, “This is the best that we can do. I am going to play this tape for anybody who will listen.”
Mr. Smith’s campaign has also made the tape available by telephone to any broadcasters who want it.
So far the campaign has only released a brief portion of the Slaughter radio interview that covers the savings and loan issue. More taped responses are forthcoming on the deficit, abortion and limiting the terms of congressmen, according to Mr. Smith.
