Band students to meet

There will be an information meeting for beginner band students on Thursday, Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m. at Rappahannock Elementary School gym. Representatives from G & M Music and Shenandoah Music of Winchester will be present for the rental of instruments. Anyone interested in the band program or having questions concerning instrumental music in Rappahannock are welcome to attend.

Karate classes

A 12-week series of junior karate classes will begin on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 5:15 to 6 p.m. at Child Care and Learning Center and will be taught by Artie Drago. Classes are for ages 6 to 15. Fee is $65. Beginners are welcome. Advance students classes will continue through until 6:30 p.m. Call Artie Drago at 635-7554 for more information.

Coppage reunion

The family of the late George and Florence Coppage will hold their reunion on Sunday, Sept. 23 on Rt. 211 at the Rappahannock Park near Washington. Lunch will be served at 1 p.m. All relatives and friends are welcome. “Come and join us with love,” said a family spokesperson.

Animal League to meet

The Rappahannock Animal Welfare League will meet on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the Washington fire hall. All members and interested persons are urged to attend. For more information call 987-8617.

School calendars available

The 1990-91 Rappahannock School calendars will be available beginning Sept. 26 at Cabin Fever Bookstore and Mountainside Market in Washington, A.L. Goff Woodworking at Ben Venue and also at the Rappahannock Elementary School. The project is sponsored by the Parent-Teacher Association and the cost is $5. Woman's Club to meet

The Rappahannock Woman’s Club will meet on Monday, Sept. 24 at 8 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Maybelle Gilkey at Chester Gap. Members are reminded of the day change due to conflicting schedules.

Parent-teacher meeting

The first parent-teacher organization meeting will be held Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the Rappahannock County Elementary School. The school calendar will be available and other topics of general interest to parents will be discussed.

Block party in Washington

The Washington Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad will sponsor a community block party on Saturday, Sept. 29. The dance, featuring the New Riders, will be held in front of the courthouse on Gay St. from 8 p.m. to midnight. Admission is $3, and food, wine and beer will be available. All proceeds will benefit the Washington VFD.

Queen contestants needed

Queen contestants are needed for the upcoming fall festival carnival sponsored by the Sperryville Volunteer Fire Department. The event is scheduled for Oct. 4-7. For more information concerning the queen contest please call Margaret Ann Wayland at 987-8260.

RCES t-shirts

The Rappahannock Elementary School PTO will sell t-shirts throughout September. All of the proceeds will go toward obtaining educational activities and materials for the children at the elementary school. A copy of the t-shirt may be seen in the office at the elementary school and this year a variety of colors are offered: coral, cool green, turquoise and peach. The cost of the t-shirt is $7 and order forms are in the office at the elementary school or by calling Linda Mallory at (703) 937-5039.

School curriculum meeting

All interested parents and teachers are invited to attend a meeting of “Parents as Partners in Learning” on Thursday, Sept. 27, at 8 p.m. at the Child Care and Learning Center. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss ways that parents can become positively involved in their children’s education and to think about current curriculum issues. Excerpts from the recent PBS and CBS specials on education in America will be shown and discussed. Call Laurie Marshall (675-3267) for further information.

Extension open house

The Rappahannock Extension staff and Extension Homemaker Clubs will host an Open House on Thursday, Sept. 27, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the new Rappahannock Extension Office, located in the Washington Arts Building on the corner of Gay and Jett steets. “The purpose of the Open House is two-fold,” stated Extension Agent Tommy Williams. “First, we want to thank the county for the new office especially the meeting room for conducting educational programs.” “And secondly,” added Helen Smith, Home Economist, “we hope the public will take the opportunity to learn more about the educational programs in agriculture, home economics, and 4-H Youth conducted by the Rappahannock Extension Office.” The public is invited to participate.
