As to the particular situation of the arts, it is my belief that an essential ingredient of any work of art is integrity. The existence of government grants endangers that integrity, and indeed, a recent meeting of artists here in Rappahannock County left me feeling that artists are beginning to be quite capable of protesting loss of subsidy a good deal more strongly than they protect genuine, and even violent, censorship.
Oh well. The battle goes on, but I still have my parade route laid out, and someday, please God, it’s going to stop raining all over the American taxpayer.
