“It was sort of a given,” the climatologist said, adding the response by the state and other areas was not undue, as hurricanes can cause unprecedented disaster. “It was a pretty well-behaved storm until it hit land,” he said, explaining the storm was predicted to take a course similar to the Interstate 95 corridor, wreaking havoc from Danville to Washington D.C.
However, the storm moved faster than predicted after landfall and travelled farther west than predicted before veering north, spreading most of its destruction through northern and western North Carolina before losing its strength over the Shenandoah Valley.
“If it would have followed the 95 corridor it would have maintained substantial strength” because it remained near a water source, he explained. As bad as it was, Dr. Michaels said, Hurricane Hugo could have been much worse.
