“We wanted another child and we’re older, so our chances of adopting in the United States were kind of nil,” explained Mrs. Hickerson.
The first step, said Mrs. Hickerson, was an official “home study” of their present situation, conducted by the Rappahannock Department of Social Services. They already had one daughter, 12-year-old Jennie, and Mr. Hickerson also has three children by a previous marriage.
