U.S. Rep. Frank R. Wolf, R10th, suggested recently that President George Bush should immediately announce his economic recovery plan, instead of waiting until the State of the Union address in January.
Rep. Wolf, who will represent Rappahannock County under the redistricting plan approved Dec. 9 by the General Assembly, suggested President Bush recall the Congress to Washington after Christmas for a special session to deal with the economy. A resolution urging the president to call for the special session has gained 66 co-sponsors, Rep. Wolf said.
He predicted that President Bush will announce “bold initiatives” for dealing with the country’s economic malaise, but added, “I would hope he will not wait until the State of the Union address. He needs to go to the nation with his message.”
Rep. Wolfs remarks were made during an interview Dec. 5 with Arundel Newspapers editors in Warrenton.
He said that the economy is in need of a “jumpstart, but we need to do it in a way that helps families.”
Rep. Wolfs own economic initiative, which has gained 259 co-sponsors in the House of Representatives, is a measure to increase the personal exemption for taxpayers with children from the present $2,150 to $3,500.
He called it “a tax break to the middle class,” noting that if the standard deduction were indexed to inflation it would presently be $8,200.
Rep. Wolf testified on the measure Dec. 6 before the House Ways and Means Committee. Noting that his Tax Fairness for Families Act has gained bi-partisan support from 150 Republicans and 109 Democrats, Rep. Wolf asked that the bill be made the “centerpiece” of any economic package.
