The president said the recession would help wring inflation out of the economy and that better times were just around the comer. Had Davis been a bit more charismatic, he might well have won.
On Election Day, Nov. 2, three new Democratic members of Congress from Virginia emerged—Norman Sisisky from the 4th District, James Olin from the 6th and Rick Boucher from the 9th (and one Republican, Herbert Bateman from the 1st). The Democrats had cut the House margin to 6-4 and have now turned it in their favdr 6-4.
What has all that got to do with the price of anything? Well, 10 years later we are coming up on another potentially bellwether election year in Virginia that might give some hint of the state’s direction politically the rest of this century.
Absent the poor economy that has come about after boom times in the 1980s, Republicans might be poised for another landslide presidential win that could sweep into office two or three new Republican members of the House of Representatives at the expense of Democratic incumbents.
