The Rappahannock High varsity volleyball team is off to its best start ever after winning the Manassas Park Tip-off Tournament last weekend.
The Lady Panthers are 5-1 overall, 1-0 in the district after beating Brentsville, Manassas Park and George Mason in the tournament, Manassas Park in the opener and Clarke in the first game of district play Monday.
The team’s sole loss came against Central in a non-Bull Run District game last week.
“We’ve shown that we’re capable of playing with the best teams around,” said Coach Paul Paratore. “The tournament was a good day for teamwork.”
Consistent all-around play by Shannon Walters, strong serves by Alice Reeve and Kelly Cunningham, good spikes at the net by Lori Paratore and “hustle play” by Sherry Weakley and Heather Coffey were the keys to the tournament win, said Coach Paratore.
The team started its season by losing its first game at Manassas Park Dec. 10, 12-15, but then bbunced back to win the last two in the best-of-three contest, 15-2, 1510. The JVs also won, in straight sets, 15-5, 15-8.
Two days later the team suffered its only loss to date against Central at home, 15-11, 3-15, 7-15 (the JVs lost 0-15, 8-15). Central won the district last season.
The Lady Panthers opened strong in the Tip-off Tournament, beating Brentsville 15-3, 15-6, and Manassas Park 15-8, 15-6, to set up the title game with the George Mason Mustangs.
The first game went into extra serves before Rappahannock won 16-14, but the deciding game wasn’t as close, 15-8.
