During the debate, Gov. Wilder boasted of how he is overcoming the fiscal crisis in Virginia without raising taxes. That too, is true, as far as it goes.
However, we invite the governor to visit Rappahannock County—or any other county or city in Virginia—and listen as local officials explain what the state’s budget cutting has done to their fiscal situation.
The budget balancing in Richmond was done largely using the same method by which President Ronald Reagan attempted a similar feat in Washington: by shifting the burden of financing programs to local governments. But the voters know that whether the taxes are levied in Washington, or Richmond, or Warrenton, they still come out of the same pockets.
Only Gov. Wilder knows what he really wants. But we know what he should do. Come home, governor. New Hampshire can wait. Virginia needs you now.
