Town Council member Susan Parrish released a comprehensive study of the parking situation in the Town of Washington during the council meeting last week, telling the council: “Theoretically we’ve got a lot of parking problems in town, but it seems to work pretty well. ”
One of the study’s major findings concerns “No Parking” areas. Mrs. Parrish said a VDOT official told her that “there are virtually no VDOT signs designating Parking or No Parking areas in the town, and cars have historically been parked wherever is convenient. This situation has been allowed to continue because of relatively low traffic volume and slow speeds, and because the situation has not been deemed to present an impediment to traffic or a safety hazard.”
“In reality,” the study continues, “the potential for danger may be a serious consideration because of the narrowness of town streets and widespread disregard of posted speed limits. The minimum right-ofway normally required for roads by VDOT is relaxed in historic districts so that the character of places to be preserved can be maintained.
