Broken down by racial group, there were 6,095 whites, 491 blacks, 10 American Indians, Eskimos or Aleuts and 14 Asians or Pacific islanders living in Rappahannock at the time of the Census (April, 1990).
Statewide there were 3.03 million men, 3.15 million women, 4.79 million whites and 1.16 million blacks.
Rappahannock’s population had dropped from 5,368 in 1960 to 5,199 in 1970 before bouncing back to 6,093 in 1980 and 6,622 last year. TTie Town of Washington saw a similar fluctuation: 255 in 1960, 189 in 1970,247 in 1980 and 198 last year.
The Virginia Employment Commission projections have the county population increasing to about 7,300 persons by the turn of the century. There are no projections for Washington’s population.
PD-9 also keeps income figures and projections for families, households and on a per-capita basis, as supplied by U. Va.’s Center for Public Service.
In 1989, the most recent year for which per capita personal income figures are available, Rappahannock’s average income was $17,648. - Other surrounding counties: Culpeper $17,081, Fauquier $23,694, Madison $14,902 and Orange $16,099.
Medium family income in Rappahannock in 1990 was $38,615, and household income was $32,328, as estimated by the Demographic Section of U.Va.’s Center for Public Service.. Projections for coming years: 1991 (family) $41,214, (household) $34,414; 1992 (family) $43,863, (household) $36,542; and 1993 (family) $46,581, (household) $38,715.
The 1990 Census made detailed studies of housing by type and cost. The Census counted 2,964 total housing units in Rappahannock, about the size of what is proposed at the South Wales development near the county line on Route 229 in Culpeper County.
Of that total, 2,748 are singleunit, detached homes, 30 are attached homes, 79 are buildings containing two-to-four housing units and 10 are buildings containing fiveto-nine units. Rappahannock does not have a single apartment building with 10 or more units. There were also 97 mobile homes or house trailers.
