Mayor Morehouse said the town has been trying to get the Historic District Ordinance amended for several months and added that he agreed with Hugh Miller, the director of the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, who said after a recent visit to the town that its ordinances should “allow some flexibility.”
Mayor Morehouse said that he planned to attend this week’s work session on the ordinance but added, “I disagree with you 100 percent that there’s been selective enforcement of the ordinance. ”
Mrs. Eldred clarified, saying the “public perception is that there’s been [selective enforcement].”
The mayor added that there is now a vacancy on the ARB and that the town is taking nominations and will fill it at the council’s January meeting.
In a related issue, the council also discussed problems it is having getting the new Subdivision Ordinance and the new Historic District Ordinance ready for a public hearing in the next months.
