He said that he would consider taxes “only after we have pared down the size of government and regained the confidence of our citizens.” Gov. Wilder did not rule out increases in cigarette and liquor taxes. One area Gov. Wilder said that he plans not to cut is direct aid to schools.
“I have demonstrated my commitment by restoring $15 million (to schools) earlier; I hope to be able to restore most if not all the $182 million (cut last year) in the next budget year,” he said.
Northern Virginia officials say they will fight to maintain the level of schoools funding provided last year.
Gov. Wilder was not specific about what he would like to cut, but he did point to some programs that may be in jeopardy.
According to Gov. Wilder, the Center for Innovative Technology (C1T) in Herndon needs $20 million to maintain its current level of funding.
“That $20 million is equivalent to what would be required for general relief, continued state aid to public libraries, or the increase in financial assistance likely to be required by our neediest students in higher education." he said.
