loses two games
The news wasn’t so good for the Rappahannock varsity basketball team this week, as it suffered two tough losses.
The Panthers held an eight-point lead and the end of the first half against George Mason in Falls Church last week before dropping the contest, 57-55.
Eight different players contributed to the Panther’s 32 points by halftime, but in the second half turnovers and mental breakdowns allowed the Mustangs to come back.
Junior forward Michael Williams had 21 points and 14 rebounds and junior guard Kevin Jolliffe had 13 points and three assists. They were the only Rappahannock players in double figures. J.C. Welch and Ryan Welch played well coming off the bench, said Panthers Coach Gary Leake.
“The first half was a textbook game, offense and defense,” said Coach Leake. “On both sides of the court we played equally well.”
“Last year we had some problems not playing 32 minutes,” said the coach, and that was the problem against George Mason. “I think it led into our loss Saturday night.”
On Saturday Luray blew out the Panthers, 73-49, in the home opener for Rappahannock before a moderate crowd.
Williams picked up three fouls in the first three minutes and sat out the rest of the half, and his 16 second-half points weren’t nearly enough to overcome Luray. Jolliffe added 12 points as well.
