Newly-elected State Sen. Ed Robb laid out a sweeping plan for overhauling Virginia’s prosecution of drug-related crime in his first speech since Election Day last week.
Sen. Robb’s proposal is designed to speed up adjudication of serious drug cases and lighten the load of misdemeanor cases.
In a speech to the annual meeting of the Virginia Association of Law Intelligence Documentation (VALID) in Charlottesville, Sen. Robb proposed setting up new, multi-jurisdictional courts to deal exclusively with serious, felonious narcotics offenses. Sen. Robb’s “Swift and Sure” drug courts would have a special prosecutor assigned to each one along with special court security.
“Defense lawyers have the luxury of specializing. Prosecutors should have the same advantage,” Sen. Robb told the lawmen.
