Post office site
gets approved;
inn postponed

The Planning Commission recommended approval for another location for the Amissville Post Office and again delayed action on the expansion at the Bleu Rock Inn at last Wednesday’s meeting.
The newest proposed location for the post office is in the present More gas station on property east of the Amissville Fire Hall. It is presently zoned rural residential. The planners recommended it be rezoned to village commercial but only if the post office is located there. The gas station has been a non-conforming use on the location.
Planning Commission member Werner Krebser asked that the minutes reflect that the recommended rezoning not be considered as setting a precedent for other commercial zoning on the north side of U.S. 211. He said the rezoning was recommended only because the site already contains a non-conforming commercial use.
This time when the planners took up the Bleu Rock’s expansion request sill the principals were in attendance. Douglas Baumgardner, representing the owners, said they were requesting a modification to the existing special exception to allow 12 more rooms of overnight accommodations and a banquet facility to seat up to 160 persons. They also wished to put in up to two tennis courts and riding facilities and to provide the needed additional parking.
Mr. Baumgardner said the buildings would be larger “but not a major departure from what is there now.” He said the proposal would not be opening the door for commercial use because “as a resort lodge facility, it takes advantage of and is dependent on the rural setting. If a facility like this were to convert itself into a Holiday Inn, it would destroy itself,” he added.
He presented the planners with a list of 16 current employees at the Bleu Rock and their addresses. All but two are county residents, he said. He also had a list of local businesses used by Bleu Rock and a list of local charities helped by the company. He also presented a petition signed by nearby neighbors. “Although there is some opposition,” he said, “It is by no means unanimous. Those opposed are a small minority.”
