PEC hosts free
Family Fair
in Warrenton
The Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC) will be hosting its first-ever Family Fair from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Sunday, July 5 in Warrenton. Admission is free. The Fair will be held at the beautiful. Airlie Conference Center, rain or shine. The location offers gardens, lakes, and rolling fields with endandgered swans and other wildlife.
A fun-filled day has been planned for the entire family. Events will include a petting zoo of exotic and domestic animals (including llamas and pygmy goats), draft horse and mule rides, 4-H Club; face painting, sheep dog demonstration and showing of the Orange County Hounds. Vintage airplanes, nature walks, and craft booths are also included.
Two special PEC raffles will be drawn at 4:50 p.m. The PEC cash raffle will have prizes of $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000; tickets for it will be $50. The PEC miniraffle will offer four Redskins tickets, dinner at Fantasr tico’s, and a quilt and picnic basket as first, second, and third prizes; tickets for the mini-raffle will cost $2. Raffle tickets will be sold prior to the fair, as well as throughout the day, and will be available at the Upper-* ville Horse Show (June 2-7). Tickets are currently available from the PEC office in Warrenton. Proceeds from the raffle tickets sales will go to fund future PEG environmental educational programs.
The fair will offer a special series of programs fob-, cusing on environmental issues including seven naturd films from the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival and guest speakers on 12 different conservation issue* ranging from ozone depletion (a program from NASA) to saving America’s forests and Virginia’s endangered wildlife. Dr. William Sladen, director of environmental studies at the swan research program at Airlie, will discuss his work with Airlie’s five varieties of swans.
Special programs for children will include the Blue Sky Puppet Theater and performance artist Billy “B.”
There will be music all day with the South Fork Blue Grass Boys and musician Ray Owen.
Food and non-alcoholic beverages will be sold on the grounds. The only additional charge will be $1 per animal ride.
In celebration of its 20th anniversary, the Piedmont Environmental Council is hosting the fair through the kindness of Dr. Head and the Environmental Studies Division of the International Academy of Preventive Medicine. To date more than 72,000 acres in the nine counties of PEC’s service region have been placed in voluntary permanent conservation easement.
