According to Smith’s daughter Connie Owens, he was expected to return home last weekend after a stint in the Winchester Hospital. Xrays revealed no broken bones, but she said he was extremely sore and bruised.
There have been several sightings of a rather large bear in the Flint Hill area in recent weeks. It may be the same animal involved in the accident, said Mrs. Owens.
• A sailor, AWOL from the U.S. Navy, is a suspect in the series of break-ins in Old Hollow, according to William Cardwell, supervisory park ranger for the U.S. Park Service, stationed at Piney River in Shenandoah National Forest.
Franklin Wheeler, 31, of Connecticut, “is someone we . . . suspect is in the park,” said Mr. Cardwell. His picture has been distributed to park workers and local sheriff’s offices, but is not being released to the news media, said Mr. Cardwell.
He emphasized that Wheeler is only a suspect at this time in the series of burglaries that have taken place in Old Hollow during the last two weeks. “We don’t know for sure that Wheeler is involved,” said Mr. Cardwell.
