Plans are underway for the
town of Washington’s annual July 4th celebration and this year promises to offer a more varied daytime and evening program. Activities will start on Saturday night, July 3, with a block dance from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. on the cordoned off section of Gay Street between Trinity Episcopal Church and the town hall. Since July 4th falls on a Sunday, the Independence Day program will not begin until noon when arts and crafts booth and sales exhibits will open. The Rappahannock Players will present a patriotic pageant in costume on the court house lawn at 1 p.m. Flea markets will be held at the . town’s churches. Baked goods, food, beverages, and ice cream will also be offered for sale at various locations in town and at 4 p.m., the Washington Volunteer Fire Department’s Ladies Auxiliary wil host a pig roast feast at the fire house.
As the strains of “Pomp and Circumstance” echo through the Rappahannock County High School auditorium next Thursday, 61 graduates from the class of 1982 will receive their diplomas. Commencement ceremonies will begin at 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 10.
Roger L. Smoot, son of Louise Adkins of Washington, graduated May 28 from Radford University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in sociology. He was also a recipient of the Outstanding Senior Award, as voted by his fellow students, in capping ceremonies held May 19.
