And Sen. Robb, in a dramatic recent development, is now reportedly the target of a grand jury investigation as to whether he lied when he testified before that body last year. I# a coverup is suspected, we have shades of Watergate.
Certainly, the fact a sitting U.S. senator is under such scrutiny indicates prosecutors are itching for an indictment and have permission to proceed from the U.S. attorney general and probably the president.
But where’s the smoking gun? That answer may come from Davie McCloud, Sen. Robb’s loyal chief of staff for many years, who now, like H.R. Haldeman, seems prepared to abandon ship. By the time you read this he may already have arranged a plea bargain that will result in a couple of misdemeanor convictions.
Some Republican leaders are already urging Sen. Robb to resign, but the troubled senator is making no comment, except to say through a spokesman he will be vindicated. * But if the grand jury feels otherwise Sen. Robb may remain under a cloud for some time to come, though
