Its last use before the Historical Society rescued it from the wrecking crew was to house the battery operated phone equipment of Centel in the 1960s. The battery-acid leaks are still visible on the wooden floor.
Meanwhile, the volunteers for the Historical Society continue their work. A compMiensive inventory of Rappahannock cemeteries, public and private, have been put into the society’s computer, and it is hoped that this will be published before the end of the summer.
A list of all Rappahannock men and women who fought in all of this country’s wars is also being compiled, put into the computer, and will perhaps be published next year.
The public is invited to visit the Rappahannock Historical Society on Gay Street for researching, reading, or just plain browsing. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays. Donations for the Jack Brown Building Fund will be gratefully accepted, and new memberships are welcomed. Annual dues are $10 for an individual, or $15 for a family membership.
