For the maintenance of interstate, primary and secondary highways and for the state’s payments to municipalities to maintain local streets, the allotment will increase from $671 million to $675.9 million.
Based on current revenue projections, Virginia expects to spend $5 billion during the next six years in state and federal funds on highway improvement projects, mass transit, ports and airports.
Mass transit grants
Public transportation programs throughout the state will receive more than $69 million in state transportation funds to assist with general operations, ridesharing programs and experimental projects in the next fiscal year.
The grants were awarded by the Commonwealth Transportation Board at its meeting Thursday in Richmond and are effective July 1, 1992 through June 30,1993.
Hazel bridge upgraded
Construction began Tuesday, May 26 on the U.S. 522 bridge over the Hazel River near Boston in Culpeper County.
The Commonwealth Transportation Board in April awarded a $618,736 contract to Wilkins Construction Co., of Amherst, to widen the bridge and repair piers and abutments.
One lane of traffic will be permitted across the bridge while construction is under way. Traffic will be controlled by signals at both ends of the bridge.
Motorists should expect short delays during the project, advised Larry Garber, Culpeper resident engineer.
