Two art forms in which the Irish have traditionally excelled are the singing of songs and the telling of stories that preserve the history and soul of the people. At 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9 song and story will take the stage at The Theatre at Washington, Va. as The Theatre presents “The Folksongs and Folklore of Ireland.” Len Graham will sing the songs and John Campbell will tell the stories.
Mr. Graham, one of the world’s foremost authorities on Irish song, comes from County Antrim, an area rich in folksong and lore. He is an all-Ireland champion in traditional singing. Mr. Graham’s singing has been featured on nine highly regarded albums. His album, “Do Me Justice,” was named Irish Folk Album of the Year in 1984. He has taken part in song festivals throughout the world and is now folk music advisor to Ulster Television.
Mr. Graham and Mr. Campbell both live in the small village of Mullaghbawn, South Armagh in Northern Ireland. They made their first joint tour of the United States last autumn, appearing in places as widely separated as Philadelphia and Oregon. They were greeted with enthusiastic reviews and warm applause wherever they appeared.
Mr. Graham and Mr. Campbell’s performance on Tuesday, June 9 will be their only appearance in this area or in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area during their current tour of the United States.
