Taking money
from workers
To the Editor:
Foreign aid has been permitted by the American people because it has a humanitarian ring to it. But there is nothing humanitarian about taking money from hard-working Americans and giving it to foreign governments.
Most of the foreign aid money is taken to taxation from middle end lower income Americans. Sending it to government leaders means that foreign aid takes money from poorer people in this rich country and gives it to the richest people in poor countries.
Right now, the Bush Administration wants to send billions to Russia and the other nations of the former Soviet Union. Giving them aid will provide the funds needed to keep their huge bureaucracies in place. It will also assure that changes needed to give these long-oppressed peoples what they both want and deserve will not occur.
Foreign aid goes to nations that buy goods from other nations receiving foreign aid. We subsidize their industries and keep them in competition with American firms. The aid they get lowers their production costs and enables them to undersell American producers. And we wonder why Americans have lost their jobs.
For over 40 years, we have financed wars between nations which never would have occurred if we hadn’t given them money to purchase weapons. One result is that aid given to one nations makes other nations hate us.
