of recession

Rappahannock County has not escaped the effects of the recession that has gripped Virginia and most of the nation.
From reductions in state funds for local education to the highest unemployment rate in the planning district, Rappahannock has been impacted by the recession.
Like the rest of Northern Virginia, the county first felt the economic downturn in reduced construction employment and lower real estate sales. In 1989 the building office issued 75 permits for new home construction at an average cost of $117,000. By 1990 the number was down to 62 permits with an average cost of $85,000. In 1991 the number of permits dropped even more to 49, but the average cost was back up to $101,000.
Through mid-April of this year the building office issued 14 permits for new house construction at an average cost of $92,000.
