A new heating and cooling plant is being installed this week at the Rappahannock Historical Society.
The Executive Board of the society has long known that the precious documents, books, letters, and in, fact, all the historical collection was in danger of deteriorating in the cold winters and the humid hot summers of the past years.
The society had requested its members to donate money for a building fund in memory of the late Jack Brown, former president and building and grounds committee chairman for the society’s building. He was a Rappahannock native and a the descendant of several old Rappahannock families.
The new climate control system, which is being installed by contractors Keys and Sims, will sustain an even, moisture-regulated temperature in the 170-year-old building. Contractors are being careful to respect the historical integrity of the old building. The structure once housed the Treasurer’s Office, a 4 home, a school for young ladies, and a even a tavern.
