Beverly Cosham was told by the legendary E.Y. “Yip” Harburg that no other singer interprets his songs as well as she does.
At 8 p.m. Saturday, June 6 Ms. Cosham will be at The Theatre at Washington, Va. with “Songs from Broadway and Beyond,” a program featuring the lyrics of Mr. Harburg and the music .of Harold Arlen.
Although as a team Mr. Harburg and Mr. Arlen wrote for the movies (“The Wizard of Oz"), for the Broadway stage (“Jamaica”), and many songs that have become standards (“It’s Only A Paper Moon,” “Over The Rainbow,” and “Old Devil Moon"), they also created music separately.
Mr. Harburg put words to the music of numerous composers - Vernon Duke (“April In Paris”), Burton Lane (“How Are Things in Glocca Morra” and “Look To The Rainbow”), and Jay Gomey (“Brother, Can You Spare A Dime”). ?
And Mr. Arlen’s other collaborators include Johnny Mercer (“Come Rain Or Come Shine” and “Accentuate The Positive”), Ira Gershwin ("The Man That Got Away”), Ted Koehler (“Stormy Weather”) and Truman Capote (“A Sleeping Bee”).
Ms. Cosham has performed both as a singer and actress in nightclubs and theaters in New York, Houston, Baltimore, New Haven, San Antonio, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. Twice she has been guest soloist with the Navy Commodores Jazz Ensemble. She has also appeared in specials for the Black Entertainment Network and in the series “Offbeat” for PBS. She has two albums to her credit, “Beverly Sings Blue” and “Something Cool,” which was nominated for a Washington Area Music Award. _ «..
