The Commonwealth Transportation Board has approved a tentative budget of $1.89 billion for the Virginia Department of Transportation and tentative allocations totaling $829.5 million for fiscal year 1992-93.
At its meeting Thursday in Richmond, the board also approved a tentative six-year improvement program that includes 160 new highway improvement projects.
"A significant increase in federal revenues from the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 allows us to deliver a strong, stable transportation program,” said Transportation Commissioner Ray D. Pethtel.
The budget is 3.7 percent larger than the 1991-92 budget and is the first increase in three years.
The new federal legislation establishes federal authorizations through 1997, providing better planning for future transportation improvements.
