Rappahannock County scarecrows are being offered an extended usefulness this year. They are invited to enter a month-long competition for prizes and publicity by Flint Hill’s bed and breakfast.
As you protect and decorate your garden for 1992, design and assemble your scarecrow to perform for another month. Caledonia Farm B&B invites it to adorn a steel stake from Oct. 3 through Oct. 31. Entries will line the entrance drive in front of the newly rebuilt dry-stack stone fence.
The display of Rappahannock creativity will be judged on Halloween by a panel of presumed experts without requiring any evidence of having effectively deterred crows. Cash prizes will be $100, $75, $50 and $25. Total hospitality gift certificates may be substituted. All entries will receive a bottle of Alpenglow or .wine from Farfelu or Oasis.
Caledonia Farm B&B’s host, Phil Irwin, has admired the many Rappahannock scarecrows since he adopted the county over 30 years ago. “They should not be forgotten just because the gardening season ends.” He adds, “While we haven’t recognized a crow problem along our driveway, this year photographers might be.”
