it will still be tough for many to understand what the various transgressions were.
Most everybody for example, had trouble believing Sen. Robb when he said while alone in a hotel room with a former Miss Virginia he took off his clothes and got a massage but that was as far as it went. The denial simply didn’t seem credible.
But the difficult thing to explain is the tape of the Wilder conversation. We are told it was a federal offense for the conversation to be recorded but not a violation for Sen. Robb’s people to accept the tape and keep it but illegal to let reporters transcribe it and maybe illegal to even tell anyone about it. And, of course, it’s clearly illegal to falsify testimony before a grand jury.
One thing is certain: Richard Nixon allegedly said he wished he’d burned those damned tapes, and Chuch Robb and three former staffers undoubtedly wish they had destroyed the small cassette which has caused them so much grief.
