I also have a firm commitment to the rural lifestyle of Rappahannock County and the relationship between these qualities and the schools. While I earn my primary income from “high tech” pursuits in the city. 1 live on a fairly good-sized farm. I work on a part-time basis raising trees and shrubs and managing a small forest. 1 have a great love of the land and sincere adnvration for people who make even pari of their living from the land or from working in the various trades. I certainly understand that money does not come easily from such work and the related concern that tax monies be used very carefully.
2. Strengths include 1) A good leadership team. The system-wide reorganization this summer has given the system strong and effective leadership from the central office to the building principals. 2) Staff morale — This important intangible factor is very high. 3) The school system is committed to the notion of continuous improvement, one of the most important concepts of “Total Quality Management.” 4) Values Education — In a time in which there are increased calls for the (re)introduction of traditional values into public education, Rappahannock is a leader in values education. 5) Bang for the Buck — We have a not perfect, but pretty efficient, use of financial resources.
3. Weaknesses of the schools include 1) test scores — Our students have had mixed results on standardized tests. 2) Lack of solid preparation for future challenges. We do not always require enough of our students
