Something strange happened to Lorinda Bosch’s U-12 soccer team this week: They creamed Fauquier-V, 14-1.
Instead of feeling gleeful, they felt slightly rueful. The gap was just too large.
“1 hate to say it, but you want a fair challenge,” said Ms. Bosch. “It was obvious that they (their opponents) weren’t experienced — they seemed to have a lot of new players I on their team.”
' Ms. Bosch added that her team played particularly well. “Everyone really clicked. I saw a lot of good thinking going on. The kids passed a lot more generously than they had ever done before.”
To try to even things out, Ms. Bosch shifted players around, using boys who usually played defense as forwards. Even that didn’t help. Elliot Nichols, who feels most comfortable playing defense, found himself kicking four goals when he was shifted forward. The rest of the goals were made by Alexander Strange, Ben Price and Ryan Brown.
“We were able to penetrate their : defense very easily,” said Ms. Bosch.
