Smith, who had left Virginia to pursue a career in academia, came back to the winery in 1977 to work full time. With some chemistry background and a fluency in French, Italian and German, he read the leading texts on enology. From teaching philosophy at Oxford to becoming a wine-maker. Smith now has an “eight-days-a- week” career.
With his dry wit and enthusiasm for his craft. Smith looks to the future and to the growing respect for Virginia wines. Asked about things he has learned in his life work Smith comments, “Well, after 23 years, I have ceased to believe in the weatherman.”
