They can be read like a frieze or a relief sculpture, never breaking the surface. The boats too are formed by the shadows of greenery that surrounds them. The technical use of mask is interesting as light breaking over the water and then becoming broken shadow on lightened objects. There is a seamless visual flow from details into washes of color back into details. The shadow in this painting envelopes and creates the boats and cargo at the edges of the water. The light itself is a fullness of color-light.
